My personal learning experiences have shaped my career & beliefs:
Youth:
At age 14, I taught myself HTML coding by following along with a "beginner's" tutorial on the website HTMLgoodies.com. As a hands-on learner, I read the tutorial, typed the code in Notepad and tested in Internet Explorer. I had no idea that the skill I was learning (HTML coding) would ultimately shape my future career. At age 14, my primary motivation was that I'd seen some boys at school building HTML websites and I was curious to see whether I could learn HTML, too.
University:
A topic that stands out to me from my college courses is sustainability and environmental studies. Our professor taught us through blended learning methods for all learning styles, including lectures, videos, hands-on work in the field and science experiments, and giving presentations to the class, to name a few. We learned information about sociology, environmental studies, climate change, politics, activism, and philanthropy. My college required this course to fulfill its Social Studies requirement and it ended up being one of the most memorable courses from my entire college career.
Career:
The topic that stands out the most was soft skills (empathy and interpersonal communications). We were taught information regarding company policies and procedures. We were new to the organization and needed to learn company behavior requirements and phone etiquette when conducting business phone calls with customers. My corporate trainer was teaching this topic. He had us all take a survey before class to determine our unique learning styles, and then he delivered the information to us via a blended style for all types of learners. I recall learning best through hands-on activities and role playing.
